Prior to the launch of their campaigns ahead of the 2020 Myanmar elections, 31 more political parties have received the blue badge on their Facebook pages verified by the Facebook company. This brings the total number of verified political party Facebook pages to 36.
If you see a blue badge on a Page or profile, it means that Facebook confirmed that this is the authentic Page or profile for this public figure, political party, media company or brand.
The Facebook page verification process is a follow-up action of two STEP Democracy workshops for political parties aimed at enhancing their capacities to conduct an effective and responsible political campaign on social media. The process of political party page verification was facilitated by the Danish Institute for Parties and Democracy - DIPD, one of the EU-funded STEP Democracy’s international partner organizations, in coordination with Facebook company and the International Republican Institute (IRI).
“Currently, there is a lot of misinformation and disinformation spreading widely on Facebook. Having the blue badge on political parties’ Facebook pages lets people easily find the parties they support, and avoids mis- and disinformation related to political parties and their election campaigns. This is what we all have to welcome and be thankful for,” said U Shwe Min, Chairman of Lisu National Development Party – LNDP.
The objective of the verification process is to combat the dissemination of misinformation and hate speech on social media in Myanmar, especially in the election period and to facilitate political parties’ engagement with their voters.
“Having received the blue badge on our party’s Facebook page, it helps our supporters to identify which ones are fake and which ones are real. Like well-known politicians and cabinet members, political parties also grapple with fake pages on Facebook so the verification process helps us a lot in engaging with our authentic supporters,’’ said Daw Hnin Hnin Hnway, Associate Secretary of Democratic Party for a New Society – DPNS
The European Union (EU) funded project ‘Support to Electoral Processes and Democracy – STEP Democracy’ – supports inclusive, peaceful and credible electoral processes and enhances the capacity of national stakeholders to strengthen Myanmar’s democratic transition.
