STEP Democracy facilitates dialogue between Ayeyawady Election Sub-Commissions and Political Parties

10 June, 2020

The General Elections are now confirmed to take place on time this year. Political parties are now keener to get the latest updates on election regulations and procedures to prepare themselves well to contest in the upcoming 2020 General Elections.

In a bid to support an environment of openness and transparency ahead of the 2020 election, STEP Democracy’s international partner, the Danish Institute for Parties and Democracy - DIPD facilitates a series of dialogues between Myanmar’s States and Regions Election Sub-Commissions and political parties throughout the country.

In this context, on 29 May, DIPD facilitated an online dialogue between the Ayeyarwady Region Election Sub-Commission and political parties.

Participants openly shared their concerns and asked questions about the elections administration and regulation. The Sub-commission of Ayeyarwady, in particular, highlighted its readiness to continue to engage in a meaningful dialogue with political parties to ensure election related updates are clearly communicated in a time sensitive manner ahead of the elections.

“We welcome political parties’ engagement and participation in this dialogue and encourage other  parties to strengthen their engagement with respective sub-commissioners at different levels to have their questions answered regarding election preparation”, said by Chairperson of Ayeyarwady Region Election Sub-Commission.

Since December 2019, the European Union-funded STEP Democracy partner DIPD has facilitated dialogues in Sagaing Region, Yangon Region, Kayah State and Kachin State.

“This dialogue contributed to building trust among election stakeholders to achieve a common goal, and that positions us well to work together to deliver free, fair and credible elections in 2020,”said Dr. Manam Tu Ja, the leader of Kachin State People’s Party at the dialogue  in Myitkyina, Kachin State.

The dialogues enable representatives from political parties and sub-commissions interactively discuss electoral issues such as laws and regulations for political parties & candidates, candidate registration & the election campaign, advance voting and voter education as well as the update of the voter list.

STEP Democracy is committed to continue, upon the request of the UEC, to support dialogue between election sub-commissions and political parties all over the country prior to the 2020 Elections.
