Work continues on Electoral Risk Management

In the context of the preparation of the internationally praised 2015 General Elections of Myanmar, International IDEA has supported the Union Election Commission (UEC) of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to establish an Electoral Risk Management (ERM) mechanism. Structured around the pivotal instrument of International IDEA’s Electoral Risk Management Tool (ERMTool), an ERM Unit was equipped, trained and operationalized with the support of IDEA under its STEP Democracy program funded by the European Union over the first half of 2015, and became central to the UEC electoral risk management strategy for the 2015 General Elections which were internationally recognized as peaceful and fair.

DRI launches interactive election maps

The votes have been counted, most of the election results are known, and the National League for Democracy has won an absolute majority in both the Phyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) and the Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House). Of course the result will only be truly final when the Union Election Commission has processed and resolved all the complaints that have been lodged, but drastic corrections are not to be expected.

IDEA’s final sprint to election day

Last Thursday morning, IDEA’s Myanmar country Head of Office Jorge Valladares walked into the IDEA office at the Union Election Commission in Naypyitaw to find makeshift beds and half-drunk cups of coffee. The team had been up all night working with UEC staff to scrutinize election observers, and they had no plans of quitting anytime soon.

MID releases report on media election coverage

On November 6, just two days prior to the elections, the Myanmar Institute for Democracy (MID) released its third media monitoring report, in cooperation with STEP Democracy partner Democracy Reporting International. A final report on media election coverage will be released within two weeks after the election.

Advanced media trainings in Yangon and four other cities

Between 20th September and 6th October 2015, we conducted 5 advanced media trainings in Yangon, Mandalay, but also Mawlemyein, Myitkyina and Taunggyi. A total of 104 participants from UEC sub-commissions have taken part to these interactive trainings that mainly focused on identification of hot topics, key messages and interview skills.
